Equine Communication Through Body Language
Round Pen—Theory and Techniques
A horse's natural method of communication is with body language. He cannot learn to talk in our vocal language, but we can learn to converse with him through body language. We can ask him to replace unwanted behaviors with productive and safer ones. The Round Pen is our classroom to establish the connection. A series of three seminars teach this information.
Understanding the Horse includes a detailed explanation of equine thinking, herd dynamics and how the round pen becomes a classroom for communicating with the horse.
Training — Mental and Emotional builds upon the first seminar, showing communication in a manner that is understandable to the horse can be used to teach the horse how to solve problems rather than instinctively running away. It covers more advanced work such as 'sacking out', the 'calm down cue' and 'spook in place'.
Riding Communication deals with the transition from on-the-ground training to communicating with your horse while riding. This seminar looks at balance, the use of the 'calm down cue' through the reins and the use of communication techniques to prepare the un-ridden horse for tack and a rider.
These three seminars are offered periodically during warm weather (see Products and Schedule). The information is also available to groups or individuals by appointment throughout the year.
