The STS-2 Sumerel Therapy System is a two-part system that allows us to locate and help correct physical problems in our horses.
First, the horse is scanned with the STS-2 SCANNER, a device which goes over the horse’s body externally and pinpoints exactly where any problems exist. The SCANNER emits a micro current of electricity which neither the human nor the horse can feel. That current is used to measure the resistance in the tissue it contacts. High resistance means normal, healthy tissue. Low resistance means there is something wrong at that point.
When a problem is detected, the SCANNER beeps to indicate the location. The SCANNER does NOT diagnose problems. It simply locates where problems exist. The spot is marked with a water soluable 'stock marking' crayon. When the horse is completely scanned with perhaps dozens of dots marked all over his body indicating the areas causing him problems at that time, the horse is ready for the second step - treating the problems the SCANNER located.
The Equine Therapy Unit (ETU) uses pads which emit red and infrared light to stimulate the body to heal. The pads are placed over the marked spots and held there gently while the lights are on. Each marked spot is treated individually until all have been covered. By this point, the horse will have indicated acceptance with many signals of relaxation throughout his body.
[Dan Sumerel: "I say ’horse’s body’ but it is also equally effective on other animals and humans as well. This may be a new concept to many of you, but using ’light’ as a therapy is actually quite common in Europe but still a bit ’outside the norm’ in the USA. Although not yet a common approach to healing, the validity of light therapy has been proven in clinical tests by many universities as well as other organizations such as NASA. In short it works!
If you think you have a hock problem, scan the hock. If it beeps, there IS a hock problem. If not, the problem is elsewhere. We always scan the whole horse, as you really never know what all is going on in any given horse. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have been called in to scan a horse, only to find the people were not even looking in the right area!"]

This picture of Bobby was taken just after an STS-2 Light Therapy session in November 2007. If you look closely, you can see the green dots that marked the spots which needed attention that day.
Bobby is a retired police horse who was used for extensive jumping by a previous owner. His present owner, Jeanne Eichelsdoerfer, acquired him a few years ago. They had wonderful rides together for about a year, but then she decided to retire him due to problems with his knees and hocks. She began massage therapy which he continues to receive.
Jeanne adds, “Bobby didn't get any real treatment for several years and the massage therapy has been for perhaps 2 years. During the untreated years he had Lyme disease and other ailments that various vets didn't bother much about....though one was going to put him down and another thought he had Cushings disease. He is probably 27 or 28 years old.”
In September 2006, we began STS-2 Light Therapy treatments for Bobby on a regular basis because he was becoming very stiff and uncomfortable. By the fall of 2007 (when the photo was taken), he had improved greatly, with two very clear indications of this. First, after more than a year of not lying down in his stall during the night, he has resumed this routine. Second, he can now comfortably lift all four feet for the hoof care specialist, impossible a year ago.
Jeanne and I are thrilled to see Bobby so much more comfortable due to the help of the STS-2 Therapy System. (This information is shared with the permission of Jeanne Eichelsdoerfer.)

Addendum to Bobby's Story:
Jeanne called me on a Tuesday in mid-January 2008. Bobby had come in from the field with a sensitive left rear leg on Monday evening. He was very reluctant to put weight on it by Tuesday AM. So on Tuesday afternoon I did a scan and Light Therapy treatment. He was better Wednesday, but still a bit stiff and quiet, so Thursday I went back and repeated the scan and treatment. He is much better. His regularly scheduled Light Therapy was Sunday AM. He had his usual scan and treatment and is back to his sweet, happy self.

STS-2 Therapy System Technician
Ebony lives with my Mother, 400 miles from us. Mom found her lost and starving a number of years ago. She took Ebony to a veterinarian who managed to save her. One of the problems was with her skin. She had almost no hair on her hind end and legs, looking as though she had a 'poodle' clip.
Over the next few years, several veterianrians had Mom try various pills and ointments to help this situation, with some, but never permanent success. The hair loss always existed in varying degrees.
In February, 2006, we went to visit Mom, and as I had become an STS-2 Light Therapy Technician, I took my equipment with me. While we were there, I treated Ebony. The first photo illustrates some of the problem areas that existed then. Hair was missing in patches over her rear end and legs. She was not receiving any treatment as nothing seemed to help.
Mom later reported that Ebony was much better. Due to the distance and our work complications, our visits are limited, but we returned in June, 2007. Ebony had regrown much of her hair, but I treated her anyway. She has not experienced any further hair loss, just continues to improve.
At our last visit in March, 2008, Ebony had a full coat of hair (second photo), but of course received a 'feel-good' treatment with the lights anyway. She is a wonderful, loving kitty, and we are all thrilled to see her looking so well.

Judith,
I am so glad I had you to our farm with the SUMEREL Light Therapy System. My weanling colt had severe dicubitous ulcers on both sides of both hocks due to being sick as a newborn. He spent his first week at Tufts Veterinary Hospital. They had to clip, tap, and flush both hocks as they suspected septicemia in both hocks. Luckily he wasn't infected! As a result of the treatments and being away from his dam permanently DJ spent a lot of time laying down. So, his fragile hocks ulcerated. I tried everything, expensive RX ointments and bandages, cleaning daily, everything. The wounds continued to get worse. After one session with you and the SUMEREL Light Therapy System his hocks began to close. Within 3 days the wounds were no longer open or sore. In two weeks he had healed almost completely! Thanks so much!
